Dear Friends and Family,
I am excited to share with you about the exciting opportunity I have been given to embark on a 1-month adventure to the Philippines during January 2017! I will have the privilege of serving with Shalom Christian Birthing Center in Antipolo City, Philippines, through Action International Ministries. Action International Ministries (ACTION) is an evangelical, interdenominational missionary-sending agency that works in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. Their strategy for urban ministry involves evangelism, discipleship, and development. ACTION networks with local churches, national organizations and other mission agencies to reach people for Christ, and seeks to train them in Christian living as well as assist them in their physical and economic needs.
Since feeling led to study nursing, I have also felt passionate about medical missions. Midwifery, labor and delivery, maternal and child health have always been areas of interest that I have felt passionate about within the health field. I am currently in my senior year of nursing school at Bethel University and I have been blessed with wonderful professors and courses that have encouraged displaying compassion and caring for the least of these in the Minneapolis community, including: those that are homeless, immigrants, those in poverty, single parents, and others who have less opportunities to receive quality health care. Studying nursing has become more than just about a future career, but also a ministry and a way to be the hands and feet of Christ to those I am able to care for.
I am very thankful for the opportunity I have been given to intern at Shalom Birthing Clinic in the Philippines. I am excited to gain some valuable experience with labor and delivery, global health care, medical missions, and to experience a new country, culture, and language. I am praying that God will use this time to teach me, stretch me, and allow me to be a light for Christ to those that I am able to serve.
Unfortunately, with any traveling adventure comes a cost. I am trusting that just as God has called me to go on this trip, He will also provide for this trip and all the necessary support I need. The expected cost of my trip will be about $2,800. This will include airfare, room and board and transportation while in the Philippines, pre-travel expenses, which will include vaccinations, necessary equipment (such as latex gloves, proper clothing, etc) and miscellaneous expenses such as a visa and a debrief retreat at the end of my internship. I have raised about $1,000 so far, and I am amazed how God has already provided will continue to provide.
If you are interested in joining me throughout this journey, there are many significant ways that can help. First and foremost, I ask you to continually pray for preparation, safety, guidance, boldness in sharing the Gospel, and holistic growth: spiritually, intellectually, and relationally. Secondly, if God places it on your heart to donate financially there are a couple ways this can be done:
- Give online at https://www.actioninternational.org/helstad
- Mail a check directly to Action International Ministries. A response form is enclosed in this link to print. responseformtemplate-docx
- Make checks payable to Action International Ministries; Include “for Laura to Shalom” in the memo
- Include the response form in the envelope you mail.
- Mail back to Action International Ministries, PO Box 398, Mountlake Terrace, WA 98043-0398 with the pre-paid envelope.
Also, I have attached a short video about Shalom Birthing Clinic if you would like to learn more about where my internship will take place. I will also attach the website.
Thank you in advance for considering partnering with me on this journey.
